Hoërskool Ben Vorster pays tribute to former teacher

Hoërskool Ben Vorster remembers beloved teacher Anso Tosen, a founding staff member known for her creativity and dedication.

TZANEEN – A treasured icon of the Hoërskool Ben Vorster family, Anso Tosen, passed away on November 8, at the age of 85.

Tosen began her career at the school as a young teacher, becoming one of its first staff members when the school opened in 1962. It was here that she met her husband, Jan Tosen. The two taught at the school until their retirement.

She made a remarkable contribution to Ben Vorster, not only as a mathematics and science teacher, but also through her deep care for the needs of learners. Many matric farewells were planned and coordinated under her capable guidance. She also ensured that Ben Vorster’s pavilion at the inter-high athletics competition stood out above those of other schools year after year, and she single-handedly brought home numerous singing trophies from the inter-high events.

Additionally, she served as director and coordinator of décor and props for every operetta and for productions such as Kerslig, Klank en Klavier, always working with meticulous attention to detail.

Tosen was, in short, remarkable, eccentric, phenomenal, hardworking, and a beloved teacher and colleague with a sharp sense of humour. “She was an example to us all. Our hearts are aching, but her Maker has granted her eternal rest, she deserves it,” the school stated.
