Maruleng Municipality warns of scammers impersonating officials

Maruleng residents are urged to be vigilant after scammers posing as municipal staff demand payment for alleged account arrears over the phone.

HOEDSPRUIT – Maruleng Local Municipality has issued a warning to residents following reports of scammers impersonating municipal staff and demanding payment for alleged account arrears.
According to the municipality, these individuals contact residents and threaten to disconnect services unless immediate payment is made, attempting to coerce people into providing financial information or paying directly to them.
Spokesperson Justice Shipalana emphasised, “Residents must be cautious. Legitimate municipal officials will never demand immediate payment over the phone or threaten disconnection without proper notice. Always verify anyone claiming to be from the Municipality and report suspicious activity.”
The municipality reiterates that all debt collection is carried out through a transparent and lawful process, and urges residents to remain vigilant to avoid falling victim to such scams.
