WATCH: Orpen Road collapse forces closure after heavy storm damage
R531 near Wits Rural is closed after heavy rains washed away a section of the road. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
LIMPOPO – Heavy rains have washed away a substantial portion of the Orpen Road (R531) between Shimungwe Gate and Wits Rural, connecting to the R40, forcing authorities to shut down the road.
According to reports, a section measuring roughly 15 metres wide and 40 metres deep has been destroyed, making any attempt to cross extremely dangerous.
The damage follows intense and persistent rainfall in the region, with more adverse weather expected in the coming days.
Road closure and safety warning
The closure has also disrupted access to the R40, which is currently not accessible from the Wits Rural side.
Officials have strongly warned motorists not to approach or attempt to cross the damaged section under any circumstances, as the surrounding road structure may be unstable and at risk of further collapse.
Alternative routes available
Alternative routes are available for those who need to travel through the area, they said.
Drivers can detour from the Orpen side via a road just past Wits Rural, passing through Skagula Clinic and connecting to Acornhoek to rejoin the R40.
However, travellers should remain vigilant, as ongoing rainfall could affect these routes as well.
Weather outlook and travel advisory
Weather forecasts indicate widespread heavy rain between April 22 and 23, spanning from Haenertsburg through to Kruger National Park, raising concerns about further flooding, additional infrastructure damage, and hazardous driving conditions.
Authorities and residents are advising travellers, especially those planning trips through Orpen Gate and surrounding areas, to postpone non-essential journeys.
Those who must travel are urged to stay informed, follow official road closures, and prioritise safety at all times.
