LIMPOPO – Agriculture and Rural Development MEC Nakedi Kekana visited the Mopani North agro-ecological zone at Gaza Beef outside Giyani on Thursday, April 9.
Government intervention to support flood-hit farmers
This visit was part of a critical government intervention to distribute essential production inputs, including seedlings and fertilisers, to local farmers who were devastated by recent unprecedented floods.
Restoring food security in Greater Giyani
The distribution was aimed at restoring food security and supporting farmers in the hard-hit Greater Giyani area, where submerged roads and waterlogged fields had brought farming operations to a standstill in January.
Assessment of animal handling facility in Mbaula
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, April 7, officials from the department, led by acting chief director Masaka Mabilo, visited Mbaula village to assess progress on the construction of an animal handling facility.
Collaborative effort with local farmers and contractors
The visit included livestock farmers and the appointed contractor, reflecting a collaborative effort to restore critical agricultural infrastructure.
Flood damage and ongoing recovery efforts
Mbaula was one of the areas worst hit by the floods, which caused significant damage to farming facilities.
The ongoing assessment aims to ensure that the project is on track and responsive to the community’s needs, supporting recovery efforts and strengthening resilience among local farmers.
