Namakgale runner completes first half-marathon in Polokwane

Mmamoratwa Mashile achieves a breakthrough moment by finishing her first half-marathon at the Mall of the North Marathon.

PHALABORWA – When Mmamoratwa Mashile from Namakgale stood at the starting line of the Mall of the North Marathon in Polokwane on Sunday, April 19, she carried more than running shoes and determination. She carried fear, hope, and a promise she had made to herself.

The determined runner said that the race was more than just crossing a finish line. It was about challenging herself and proving that she could go beyond the 10km races she was used to.

“As it was my first time doing a half-marathon, I thought, why not my first experience at the Mall of the North Marathon?” said Mashile.

A demanding but rewarding challenge

She described the route as demanding, but said years of running shorter distances gave her the courage to take on the challenge.

“It was a tough route, but because I have been a runner for quite some time doing my 10km races, I guess this was my leap of faith.

“I did it scared, I did it nervously, and I finished that race. I am so proud of myself,” she said.

From 10km races to 21.1km achievement

Mashile officially became a runner in 2025 and has entered races regularly since then.

However, she said 2026 was always going to be the year she stepped up to the half-marathon distance.

“I wanted to challenge myself, see how far I can go, and keep the promise I made to myself of running my first half-marathon this year,” she stated.

Months of preparation and support

She revealed that her training for the event began in January and focused on preparing her body and mind for the longer distance.

“Since I started running, I knew that someday I was going to have to take on a half-marathon.

“My training was beyond the 10km races that I would usually sign up for, and I am so glad I had my girls to push me through it and encourage me,” said Mashile.

Proud milestone achieved

Now celebrating a major milestone, Mashile said completing her first 21.1km has only increased her hunger for more races.

“I can’t wait to sign up for many more races,” she concluded.
