Premier grills Letaba Hospital renal ward contractor

Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba warns that continued delays to Letaba Hospital's renal unit could lead to the contractor's contract being terminated.

LIMPOPO – Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba last week conducted an oversight visit to Letaba Hospital outside Nkowankowa to assess progress on the hospital’s renal and dialysis unit.

The visit followed an earlier inspection on April 7, when Ramathuba expressed dissatisfaction with delays and instructed the Department of Health and hospital management to complete the unit by April 15.

On her return, she said progress remained unsatisfactory, despite contractors assuring her the project would be finished by July.

Ramathuba warned that continued delays could lead to the termination of the contractor’s contract, saying the slow pace was putting patients’ lives at risk.

She said she was prepared to defend the department in court if legal action followed the cancellation of the contract.

The premier stressed the urgent need for more dialysis facilities in the province so patients can receive treatment in proper wards.

She also urged patients to first visit local clinics for referral letters before visiting the hospital, to help improve efficiency, and advised healthcare workers to maintain high standards of patient care.
