Local chefs impress at Tzaneen potjiekos showdown
Pot ‘n Plow claimed top honours at the Tzaneen Chamber of Commerce potjiekos competition during the Smit & Kie Family Day.
TZANEEN – A vibrant celebration of food, community, and friendly competition unfolded at the Smit & Kie Family Day on Friday, May 1, as the Tzaneen Chamber of Commerce hosted a lively Potjiekos Competition, proudly sponsored by Trans Letaba Panelbeaters.
The event drew enthusiastic participation from local establishments, each bringing their unique flair and flavour to the traditional South African cooking style.
Teams bring creativity and camaraderie
Despite the competitive nature of the day, what stood out most was the spirit of unity among participants. Teams shared laughs, exchanged playful banter, and supported one another throughout the event, embodying the essence of community upliftment.
“All the competing establishments put in a lot of effort. The decor was beautiful, and the professionalism and formality of some teams were mesmerising to watch. But most of all, the banter and fun the teams had with each other really show how supporting the community is,” said Ivan Botha of Trans Letaba Panelbeaters.
Winning dishes impress judges and visitors
The culinary offerings did not disappoint. Judges and visitors alike praised the quality and creativity of the dishes, with flavours that highlighted both tradition and innovation.
One standout entry came from Krabbefontein, whose dish featured a beef shin coffee pot with vegetable dumplings, complemented by grilled bone marrow served on a warm couscous salad.
“It was the first time Krabbefontein has entered this competition, we are proud of our second-place win and that Magoebaskloof managed to take first and second spots,” said Remi Anderson, owner of Krabbefontein.
Pot ‘n Plow takes top honours
In the end, Pot ‘n Plow claimed the top prize, followed by Krabbefontein in second place. Safari Pub & Grill secured third position, while Meet & Greet rounded out the top four. The other participants were The Red Oak and George’s Valley Lodge.

Goue Jare Bejaardesorg benefits from community initiative
Beyond the competition, the event also carried a meaningful charitable component. All the prepared food was donated to Goue Jare Bejaardesorg.
Botha of Trans Letaba praised the event and its impact.
“It is truly inspiring to see businesses come together in such a positive way. This competition is not just about cooking, it’s about building relationships, supporting one another, and giving back to the community.”
