DA accuses ANC of factional battles amid Tzaneen service collapse

Following the removal of Tzaneen's mayor, the DA says the ANC is prioritising internal factional fights over failing roads, water and electricity.

TZANEEN – The DA in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality has accused the ANC-led council of prioritising internal political disputes over collapsing service delivery, following a leadership change in the municipality.

This comes after the removal of ANC Mayor Gerson Molapisane through a motion of no confidence during a council sitting today, with former Mopani District Municipality spokesperson Odas Ngobeni elected as his replacement.

DA Caucus Leader in Greater Tzaneen Municipality, Mahlatswa Lebbeus Ramalepe, said the development reflects ongoing instability within the ANC, describing it as a factional shift rather than a decision driven by governance concerns.

The party further alleged that reports linking the mayor’s removal to his refusal to allow municipal funds to be used for party-political activities would, if confirmed, point to serious abuse of public resources.

The DA also raised concern over claims that parts of the council meeting were not fully broadcast on social media, arguing that this undermines transparency and public access to council proceedings.

According to the DA, residents continue to experience deteriorating service delivery, including failing road infrastructure, inconsistent street lighting, water supply interruptions and general neglect of basic municipal services.

The party said council processes should not be used as a battleground for internal ANC disputes, arguing that residents are being left to bear the consequences of political infighting.

It added that it will continue to exercise oversight and pursue accountability where necessary, while urging residents to consider political change in the upcoming municipal elections.
