Resident funds cleanup of unsafe Namakgale area
A community member in Namakgale Zone C cleared illegal dumping and overgrown vegetation using his own funds to make the area safer.
PHALABORWA – While many residents complained about overgrown bushes and illegal dumping in Namakgale Zone C, one community member decided to take action instead of waiting for help.
Own funds used to hire TLB for cleanup
Samuel Sekgoka hired a TLB machine using his own money to clear bushes and remove waste that had become a danger to residents and an eyesore in the area.
“I did it out of love. It was never about publicity or recognition, but about creating a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for everyone,” he said.
Safety concerns for children and learners
Sekgoka said he was deeply concerned about the safety of children walking to school, residents using the roads, and learners attending nearby aftercare centre.
He explained that the situation became more worrying as winter approached and the bushes became darker and more dangerous. “I could not continue watching the area become unsafe and filthy.
“I want people to feel proud of where they live again,” he added.
Sekgoka stated that the area had grown so thick that residents could barely see through it.
Illegal dumping worsens conditions
Moreover, the area had also become an illegal dumping site, creating unpleasant smells and unhealthy living conditions for nearby residents.
“I attempted to speak to our councillor several times, but no action was taken. I eventually decided to start saving money to hire a TLB, because I am directly affected by the situation, as both my home and my aftercare centre are located near the bush,” he said.
Plans to transform area into sports ground
With support from his wife, Sekgoka saved enough money to hire the TLB for a day, which cost approximately R8 000. Instead of stopping there, he said he is currently saving money to hire a grading machine to level the area so it can be transformed into a sporting ground where children can safely play.
“If anyone is willing to assist, they are more than welcome to do so because this space belongs to the entire community,” said Sekgoka.
Sekgoka also pleaded with residents to protect the area and stop illegal dumping so that future generations can enjoy a cleaner and safer environment.
