Hoedspruit launches quick response force to combat wildfires

Hoedspruit's wildfire response has been boosted by a quick response force and a Huey helicopter to tackle veld fires in the region.

HOEDSPRUIT – A major boost to wildfire response capabilities in Hoedspruit was unveiled on Tuesday, June 16, with the official launch of the quick response force (QRF), an innovative initiative led by the Maruleng Fire Protection Association (MFPA) to combat veld fires through rapid aerial and ground-based interventions.

The launch, held in Hoedspruit, brought together firefighters, emergency response teams, aviation specialists, conservation stakeholders and local partners committed to protecting communities, wildlife and natural resources from the growing threat of wildfires.

Huey helicopter joins the fight

At the centre of the launch was the arrival of the iconic UH-1H Huey helicopter. The addition of the Huey significantly enhances the region’s aerial firefighting capabilities, allowing for faster deployment of firefighting resources and improved response times during emergencies.

The QRF is a collaborative effort between Supporting Fire Services SA, Maruleng FPA and Leading Edge Aviation. The programme combines aerial support with trained ground crews to ensure fires are detected and attacked in their early stages before they can develop into large-scale disasters.

Regional support

Representatives from the Tzaneen Emergency Support Team attended the launch and welcomed the initiative as an important step forward in strengthening regional disaster preparedness.

The organisation noted that the ability to deploy resources rapidly can make a critical difference in limiting the spread of wildfires, particularly during periods of high fire danger when strong winds and dry conditions can cause fires to spread rapidly across vast areas.

Insurance sector backs initiative

Key financial support for the initiative was provided by Old Mutual Insure, Santam, Hollard and various other insurance companies, whose contributions helped turn the project into reality.

MFPA’s JC le Roux said the QRF will play a vital role in safeguarding the region’s agricultural lands, conservation areas and rural communities.
