Phalaborwa’s Francolin College retains Balule debate title
The Phalaborwa school's four-member team delivered standout performances on a challenging conservation motion to secure their fourth debate title since 2024.
PHALABORWA – Francolin College has done it again. One year after claiming the Balule Outreach Debate Competition title, the debate team returned to Koru Camp determined to prove that their 2025 victory was no coincidence, on Tuesday, July 21.
Champions under pressure
Competing under the pressure of being defending champions, the four-member team of Natasha Mahanuke, Pholosho Malesa, Samkelo Ngcobo and Tshegofatso Malungane delivered outstanding performances to retain the coveted trophy.
The learners tackled the challenging motion, “Mega Living Landscapes offer a practical conservation model for South Africa”, presenting persuasive, well-researched arguments while showcasing exceptional critical thinking, teamwork and public speaking skills.
The road to a fourth title
Francolin College’s journey to the title began on May 7, when the team secured first place in the Namakgale Circuit, earning a spot in the finals.
The latest victory marks the school’s fourth debate title since it began competing in 2024 and its second consecutive Balule Outreach Debate Competition championship.
“Losing was simply out of the question”
First speaker Natasha Mahanuke said retaining the title was a goal the team had set from the beginning.
“I knew we were going to win because losing was simply out of the question with Ma’am. We wanted to build on what the 2025 team achieved, so we worked even harder to bring the trophy home. We are proud and excited that we were able to defend the title,” she said.
A reward for months of hard work
Teacher and debate coach Vonani Shikwambane described the achievement as a reward for months of dedication and preparation.
“I am absolutely honoured and incredibly proud of the team. Defending our title is a testament to their hard work, dedication and resilience. This achievement reflects Francolin College’s commitment to academic excellence, critical thinking and effective communication.
“These learners demonstrated that success comes through discipline, perseverance and a willingness to rise to every challenge,” she stated.
