LIMPOPO – A 43-year-old police sergeant attached to the Giyani K9 Unit appeared before the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Monday (August 3) on a charge of attempted murder. He was remanded in custody.

Dispute over passengers escalates

The member appeared in court in connection with a shooting incident that allegedly occurred at Mageva Village in the Mopani District on Saturday (August 1).

It is alleged that an altercation ensued between the accused and taxi patrollers following a disagreement over the transportation of passengers from a hiking spot. The confrontation allegedly continued near a sports ground, where the accused allegedly discharged a firearm, injuring a 36-year-old man. A second man, aged 31, escaped unharmed.

The injured victim was taken to hospital for treatment.

Bail application set for August 11

The case was postponed to August 11 for a formal bail application.

Commissioner reiterates zero-tolerance stance

Provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers reaffirmed SAPS zero-tolerance approach to criminal conduct involving police officials.

“No member of the South African Police Service is above the law.

“Any member who is alleged to have committed a criminal offence will be subjected to the full might of the law. We remain committed to upholding the integrity of the organisation and ensuring accountability,” said Scheepers.
