R349m land claim settlement for Raphahlelo community finalised

More than 660 qualifying households will receive financial compensation after the successful settlement of a long-running land claim in Limpopo.

LIMPOPO – Hundreds of households in the Raphahlelo community are set to receive financial compensation following the successful settlement of a land claim worth more than R349m.

Officials from the Limpopo Regional Land Claims Commission visited the Raphahlelo Tribal Office from October 23 to 25 to facilitate the signing of settlement agreements.

The process involved approximately 200 households, representing an estimated 500 beneficiaries, and forms part of efforts to finalise payments to all verified claimants.

Settlement brings decades-long claim to a close

The land claim was lodged by Kgoshi Lephai Patrick Raphahlelo on behalf of the community before the 1998 cut-off date.

Following an investigation, the commission determined that restoring the claimed land was not feasible and approved financial compensation instead. A total of R349 182 304 has been allocated to 668 qualifying households, with each household set to receive R522 728.

Regional Land Claims Commission spokesperson Nicholas Magada said the compensation represents the full and final settlement of the community’s land claim.

He described the settlement as a promise fulfilled, bringing the long-standing land restitution process to a close.
