Koru Camp’s Ubuntu girls camp builds dreams

Koru Camp’s Precious Mabena led her first Ubuntu girls camp, where learners explored dreams, life skills, personal development and more.

HOEDSPRUIT – Precious Mabena of Koru Camp has successfully hosted the Ubuntu girls camp on her own for the first time, earning praise for her efforts in creating a meaningful and memorable experience for the learners.

Building confidence and chasing dreams

Sponsored by the Timbavati Foundation, the three-day camp at Koru Camp focussed on personal development, dreams, and life skills.

The girls spent time journaling about their aspirations, creating strength bracelets as part of the “beads of ambition” activity and taking part in a session covering menstruation and safe sex.

The “game of life” challenged the learners to complete a series of activities designed to help them develop qualities linked to their dream careers, combining skill, imagination and teamwork.

The Timbavati Foundation also sponsored journals and sanitary pads for the participants.

Learning from the bushveld

The programme extended beyond the camp activities, with the surrounding bushveld providing its own unforgettable lessons during game drives.

Among the memorable sightings were a lioness and male mating, coincidentally occurring shortly after the reproductive health discussion.

Four lionesses were also heard calling to one another as they moved into the night, while a female elephant displayed her displeasure when a persistent male came too close. A wild cat also made an appearance after dark.

A proud moment for Precious

Koru Camp’s Corné Havenga congratulated Mabena on successfully running the camp independently for the first time.

“Precious absolutely nailed it. We are incredibly proud of her and look forward to seeing many more camps hosted by her,” said Havenga.
