Vicky gets accepted to Kaizer Chiefs Academy

Vicky Mkhawana, a soccer player at Nkowankowa Barcelona, was selected to be part of the Kaizer Chiefs Foundation Academy after he underwent an assessment and was selected for the team on Tuesday, February 8.

“I am very happy for being selected to be part of one of the biggest teams in South Africa. The Kaizer Chiefs family welcomed me with open arms. “I am scheduled to play for both U/ 17 and U/19 and it is a privilege for me to be here. “Kaizer Chiefs is all about self-discipline and respect, that is one thing they emphasise every day before we start with practice,” said Vicky.

The Kaizer Chiefs Foundation Academy was impressed by his performance on the field and proposed to his coach and mother that they would guide him on his career path. He would be attending a school closer to the academy. “There is a bus that takes us to the academy after school. After we have done our school work, we start with soccer practice,” he added.

Vicky joined Nkowankowa Barcelona two years ago and after recognising his potential, Amakhosi approached him and his family. “He is a good player and being left-footed comes with a great advantage. “Last December he won three players of the tournament trophies,” said Peace Khosa, Vicky’s coach.

He also said that last year Vicky was selected by the KwaZulu-Natal Soccer Academy but due to a lack of accommodation, he could not take up the selection. Vicky’s mother is overjoyed with her son’s accomplishment and thanked his coach. “I am over the moon, I cannot explain how happy I feel about my son being selected.

He is my second-born and his father left us in 2010 when he was still young. “I was really scared of raising a boy by myself but my son has proved to me that I am a capable mother. He is kind and I am happy that he is not into drugs and crime. “Soccer helps him to be disciplined and I would like to thank his coach for that,” said Tinyiko Makhubela, Vicky’s mother.
