Thobile makes it to the national rugby trials
Being called for the South African U/20 training squad trials, is a dream come true for rugby player, Thobile Msizazwe.
She was recently in Cape Town with other 31 ladies rugby players from all over the country who were also trialed.
The ladies who will be selected will be representing the country on August 19 against Zimbabwe in Potchefstroom.
Msizazwe (17) told the Herald that as much as she would love to be selected, she is just happy to even be considered for the trials.
Her journey with the sport started in 2019 at Bokgaga High School outside Tzaneen when she approached the school’s boys rugby team. She asked to be part of the team, but was told she could not join and that she must rather recruit other girls to start their own side.
Thankfully she managed to start a girls squad at the school.
Immediately she was called for selections, starting from circuit level until the provincial stages and that is when she started taking her talent seriously.

“I considered rugby, because I grew up an angry child and I loved fighting a lot, so I thought that this is the perfect sport for me.
“It helped me deal with the anger and emotions in a constructive way and now I am happier,” she said.
When she started out playing rugby she played as a forward, but now plays full time on wing.
During camps and games she met local rugby coach Bryan Mashigo, who she says contributed greatly in her sporting journey.

“Coach Bryan, saw something great in me, which I did not see in myself. He would always be patient with me and motivate me to keep the faith and work hard,” she added.
Mashigo, who coaches Nkowankowa Rugby, Merensky High School and is also the Limpopo Blue Bulls Grant Khomo Week team manager, said that she is a disciplined player.
“It is much easier coaching players like Thobile. When she first came to my practice sessions she came knowing nothing.

“Her mentality was that she knows nothing, but wants to learn everything. Those are the type of players we call ‘coachable players’. If I had 15 Thobiles in every session, then I would be saying I have 15 future springboks (imbokodo),” Mashigo said. Msizazwe is currently doing her Grade 12 at Madiba Comprehensive School in Kagiso, outside of Krugersdorp and hopes to study law at university while still playing rugby.
