Delsy makes it to Springboks team

A lifelong dream to represent South African on the international stage is now a reality for Delsy Mkansi.

The 19-year-old rugby player from Lusaka village outside Tzaneen has been selected for the girls U19 Springboks sevens team. Mkansi will be representing the national team in upcoming tournaments. She told the Herald that she is over the moon with her selection, and thanked God and her coaches. Her rugby journey started when she was 8 years old at Banana Primary School in Dan village where she was coached by Vincent Matsoalela.

Her life took a turn in 2018 when she met coach Bryan Mashigo, who helped her to believe in herself and her abilities as a player. She has represented Limpopo at school and was also a member of the Limpopo Blue Bulls team. Mashigo says Delsy’s best quality as a player is her speed and her selection did not come as a surprise. “Delsy is very quick and has strength, both are qualities you need for sevens rugby.” He says Delsy’s humility is a great attribution.
