Tuffy is not called the toughest race for nothing

Tintswalo Shipalana, Herald journalist, shares her SPAR Tzaneen Tuffy 4-in-1 Marathon experience.

The marathon is the toughest but most enjoyable race I have participated in. It also is the best-organised event and I applaud the organising committee for the hard work they put in. The 10th edition of the Tuffy on Saturday, March 9, was my third, but also my slowest as I walked most of the way. I did the 10km distance this year, one up from last year’s 5km fun run. In 2022 I also ran the 10km and that was a real challenge.

I enjoyed the cool misty and rainy weather and the beauty of the Agatha landscape. I had not prepared for the race, I only went jogging three times in February but had to stop along the way due to the scorching heat. My assignment for the day was to do live interviews with the runners and I loved every moment of it.

Holding my medal.

I interviewed athletes from Phalaborwa, Giyani, Tzaneen, and runners from as far as Botswana. I was quite surprised to see people from neighbouring countries taking part. I loved the goodie bag and I applaud Miami Canners for giving every athlete a can of their new relish sauce and a bottle of atchar. Well done to Tzaneen Athletics Club, next year I will be the first one to register and avoid the disappointment of not getting a free T-shirt because I registered late.
