Gallopers shine at Mall of the North Marathon

Athletes from the Giyani Gallopers Athletics Club were among the best performers at the Mall of the North Marathon in Polokwane recently.

Beryl Monakisi represented the women well in the 42.2km with a time of 04:41:29 and was third in her age category of 50-59. Jabulani Bilankulu finished the 21.1km with a time of 01:36:11 and obtained a seventh position in the men’s age category 50-59. Stanley Nzama Mavunda, also performed well. The winner of the 42.2km men’s race was Kenyan runner, Andrew Kiprop who won with a time of 02:28:36, he was followed by Letsatsi Photo with a time of 02:29:36.

Sheila Saina also from Kenya was the women’s 42.2km race winner with a time of 03:03:38, in second position was fellow Kenyan, Gladys Jepochirchir, finishing in 03:03:47 and third was Pietersburg Road Runners club member, Elsabé Cronjé with a time of 03:25:51. Giyani Gallopers coach, Themba Masingi, told the Herald that most of the runners improved their times.

“We have greatly improved our performances after we started training at our new grounds located in Kremetart. “Most runners did not feel safe running on the road, because of the danger motorists pose, but now everyone is eager to train, and we have many new runners joining us,” he said. The club will soon be hosting the GazaMed 4in1 Marathon at the Giyani Stadium on May 4.

Registration fees are R80 for the 5km run, R150 for the 10km run, R200 for the 21.1km half marathon and R300 for the 42.2km marathon. Interested parties can register online on Peak Timing and can also contact Joel Malwandla at 083 414 0019 and Themba Masingi at 072 859 5878 for inquiries.
