Mopani’s 800m international champ equals record

Prudence Sekgodiso equals her national indoor 800m record in France, showcasing her consistency and rising status in South African athletics.

LIMPOPO – South African middle-distance star Prudence Sekgodiso delivered another record-breaking performance on the World Athletics Indoor Tour in France, equaling her own national indoor 800m record with a time of 1:59.88.

Hailing from Medingen, Kgapane, Sekgodiso finished second at the prestigious meet in Liévin, France, on Thursday, February 13, clocking the exact time she had set just a week earlier at the INIT Indoor Meeting Karlsruhe in Germany.

Her remarkable consistency in two back-to-back international events has cemented her status as a rising force in South African and international athletics.

Sekgodiso’s list of achievements includes a gold in the 800m at the 2019 African U18 Championships and a five-time South African champion in the 1500m and 800m events.

Her breakthrough moment came last year when she ran an impressive 1:57.26 in May during the prestigious Diamond League, propelling her onto the global stage.

She continued her stellar form, securing her second career Diamond League victory in the 800m with a time of 1:58.66, finishing ahead of Jamaica’s Natoya Goule-Toppin (1:59.10).

Her first-ever Diamond League title in Marrakech marked a career highlight, with her lifetime best performance placing her at the top of the world rankings this year.
