Ex-Bafana player joins Phalaborwa United as coach
Phalaborwa United appointed ex-Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs star Tefu Mashamaite as head coach after promotion to the ABC Motsepe League.
PHALABORWA – Phalaborwa United FC has named former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs defender Tefu Mashamaite as their new head coach, officially announced on September 16.
The appointment follows the club’s recent promotion to the Safa Limpopo ABC Motsepe League after winning provincial playoffs, with ambitions to reach the National First Division (NFD).
Mashamaite brings extensive professional experience, having captained Bidvest Wits (2008-2011), played for Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana (2011-2015), and competed internationally in Sweden before returning to South Africa with SuperSport United (2017-2019).
He is tasked with guiding the club through its transition to semi-professional football by enhancing performance, nurturing youth talent, and establishing a sustainable, professional playing philosophy.
Kgaugelo Pilusa, Phalaborwa United’s communications manager, emphasised the significance of Mashamaite’s arrival, stating the club aims to qualify for national playoffs and secure promotion to the NFD. He also called on supporters to back the team during this new phase.
Mashamaite replaces former coach Timmy Mashele, who left the club due to internal issues.
The new coach expressed enthusiasm for the role, describing it as more than football. “My goal is to professionalise the team, implement a new system, and qualify for the Nedbank Cup while pushing for promotion to the NFD. Phalaborwa is underrepresented in South African football, and I’m excited to help raise its profile and bring recognition to the community.”
