Mpheni Defenders thrash Vondwe in opener

Mpheni beat Vondwe in their ABC Motsepe Stream-A opener, signalling strong title intent as rivals struggle.

LIMPOPO – Mpheni Home Defenders made an emphatic start to their ABC Motsepe Stream-A League campaign on Saturday, beating Vondwe Xi Bullets 3–0 at their home ground in Mpheni, Elim, in front of cheering supporters.

Dominant first-half display breaks deadlock

What was expected to be a fiercely contested derby between long-time rivals quickly turned into a statement of dominance from Mpheni and a harsh reality check for Vondwe, who were playing without their head coach.

The home side dominated from the first whistle, putting Vondwe’s defence under constant pressure. They hovered around Vondwe’s goal area like hawks, creating numerous chances in the opening minutes. Fortunately for Vondwe, their goalkeeper was in top form, pulling off a series of impressive saves that kept the score level at 0–0 for much of the first half.

But even a good goalkeeper will eventually concede goals if the team’s weak defence keeps getting breached by opposing strikers and putting him under constant pressure. Just before halftime, Mpheni finally found the breakthrough, taking a deserved 1–0 lead into the break and sending their supporters into wild celebrations.

Vondwe showed brief signs of revival in the second half, managing to push forward and breach Mpheni’s backline a few times. But their resistance didn’t last long, with the hosts constantly pressing forward and forcing them to make mistakes.

Mpheni capitalised on another defensive lapse to double their lead midway through the second half. As the visitors’ confidence faded, the home side struck again, adding a third goal just minutes before the final whistle to seal a comprehensive victory.

Former giants struggle after coaching shake-up

The 3–0 defeat marked a disappointing start for Vondwe, a team once regarded as one of the most formidable sides in the league. Last season, they were a dominant force, crushing nearly every opponent on their way to the league final without a single defeat.

But internal changes seem to have disrupted that momentum.

After losing the league title last season due to disciplinary rulings over unfinished protest matches, including one against Mpheni that cost them crucial points and left them in second place, Vondwe’s management made the controversial decision to dismiss their head coach.

Since then, the team has struggled to regain its former glory.

Their early exit from the recent Nedbank Cup qualifiers at Homu Stadium in Giyani was an early warning sign of deeper issues within the club. Saturday’s match only confirmed that the team is no longer the powerhouse it once was.

Rivalry renewed without controversy

Meanwhile, matches between Mpheni and Vondwe have historically been tense, often ending in controversy or protests over officiating.

Last season’s abandoned clash between the two sides, which was later decided by the SAFA disciplinary committee in Mpheni’s favour, is one such example.

Supporters on Saturday held their breath, hoping that whichever team won would do so convincingly to prevent any post-match protests or claims of unfair treatment. Mpheni’s decisive victory left no room for doubt, sending a clear message that they are serious contenders this season.
