Four young swimmers from Hoedspruit Aquatics deliver standout performances at the Limpopo Provincial Swimming Championships.
HOEDSPRUIT – Swimmers from Hoedspruit showcased extraordinary talent and determination at the recent Limpopo Provincial Swimming Championships, held from November 28-30 in Tzaneen.
Against nine regional clubs, some fielding teams of up to 120 swimmers, four athletes from Hoedspruit Aquatics delivered a remarkable performance, securing an impressive sixth place overall.
Coached by Terry Papadopoulos, the quartet from Southern Cross proved that size doesn’t determine success.
Their dedication, resilience, and sportsmanship were evident in every stroke, as they returned home with multiple medals, top finishes, and personal bests that reflected months of hard work in the pool.
Logan Rainier
Eleven-year-old Logan Rainier was a standout performer, bringing home multiple podium finishes. He claimed a silver medal in the 100m freestyle and bronze medals in the 50m backstroke, 50m butterfly, and 50m freestyle.
Logan also narrowly missed a podium finish in other events, placing fourth in the 100m backstroke and fifth in the 200m freestyle, demonstrating his versatility and consistent high-level performance across a range of disciplines.
Rachel Talanda
For 12-year-old Rachel Talanda, the championships marked a particularly special milestone: her first-ever provincial meet. Despite the pressure, Rachel rose to the occasion with maturity and composure.
She finished in the top 10 in the 200m freestyle, 7th in the 100m backstroke, and 6th in the 100m freestyle, where she remarkably dropped 13 seconds from her previous best.
Rachel’s determination was further rewarded with bronze medals in the 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle, as well as a fifth-place finish in the 50m butterfly. Her performance reflects both talent and a strong competitive spirit, boding well for future provincial and national events.
Cody Viljoen
Ten-year-old Cody Viljoen contributed significantly to the team’s success with consistent top 10 finishes. He excelled in the 100m breaststroke, finishing fifth while shaving 13 seconds off his personal best, and improved his 100m freestyle time by a massive 14 seconds.
Cody also secured top 10 results in the 50m breaststroke, 50m backstroke, and 50m freestyle, cementing his position as one of Hoedspruit’s emerging swimming talents.
Ilia Papadopoulos
The undisputed star of the meet was 13-year-old Ilia Papadopoulos. He delivered a phenomenal series of swims, earning 10 medals from 11 events and finishing as the top-ranked 13-year-old swimmer in Limpopo based on Hytek points.
His medal haul included seven golds across the 200m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 200m breaststroke (with a 14-second improvement), and 50m freestyle.
He added two silver medals in the 100m butterfly and 200m individual medley, and a bronze in the 50m backstroke. The only event where he narrowly missed the podium was the 50m butterfly, finishing fourth by a mere 00.40 seconds.
Ilia’s dominance in the pool, combined with the performances of his teammates, demonstrates not only individual excellence but also the growing strength of Hoedspruit Aquatics as a competitive swimming programme.

Coach’s praise
Coach Papadopoulos expressed his pride in all four athletes, highlighting that their results were a direct reflection of their “hard work, resilience, and dedication.”
He noted that the team’s achievements went beyond medals, showcasing remarkable sportsmanship, commitment to improvement, and the ability to rise to the challenge in a highly competitive environment.
