Phalaborwa runner wins silver medal at City60 Marathon

Present Mongwe helped his four-member team finish second in Pretoria's City60 relay, completing the 60km race in 4 hours 16 minutes.

PHALBORWA – Phalaborwa marathon star Present Mongwe recently took part in the City60 Marathon, a relay race held in Pretoria.

His four-member team claimed a silver medal after finishing second overall, completing the 60km race in a time of 04:16:00.

The team consisted of three University of Limpopo runners, Tisetso Chuene, Rusnath Malangane, and Selby Sekgobela, along with Mongwe. Chuene started the race at Church Square, followed by Malangane. Mongwe ran the third leg, while Sekgobela anchored the team to the finish.

Mongwe told Herald that the race was easy and enjoyable. Malangane, who hails from Tzaneen, said the team’s main objective was to try something new that allowed each runner to play to their strengths.

“We planned that each runner should complete their 15km leg in 1:15:00, with a maximum allowance of an extra five minutes. Everyone performed well. Chuene had just returned from an injury but still delivered a strong performance. It was a great run, and we really enjoyed it,” he said.

Mongwe, who represents Phalaborwa Road Runners, added that he will officially begin his training in February. He is aiming to compete in the Spar Tuffy 4-in-1 Marathon in March, which will be held in Tzaneen.

In December last year, Mongwe was among the standout performers at the Magoebaskloof Plunge 3-in-1 Marathon, where he completed the 42.2km race in an impressive time.
