Phalaborwa United captain retires

Captain Wiseman 'Madlaya' Maluleke has retired from professional football after leading Phalaborwa United to promotion.

PHALABORWA – Phalaborwa United fans bid farewell to one of their greatest leaders as Wiseman “Madlaya” Maluleke officially retired from professional football on January 20.

The 34-year-old captain leaves behind a remarkable legacy of leadership, dedication, and memorable moments on the field.

Maluleke began his football journey in his hometown of Giyani, playing on the dusty streets of Xikukwani village during his primary school days. He went on to play for several top South African clubs, including Witbank Spurs (NFD), Jomo Cosmos (NFD/PSL), Polokwane City (PSL), Black Leopards (PSL/NFD), Emmanuel FC (ABC), and Phalaborwa United (SAB).

He capped off his career by helping Phalaborwa United gain promotion to the ABC Motsepe League, where he hung up his boots.

Reflecting on his career, Maluleke singled out his time at Jomo Cosmos as particularly meaningful. “All the teams played a huge role, but Jomo Cosmos stands out because of the relationship I had with Jomo Sono and the game time I received there,” he said.

One of his proudest moments came when he scored the goal that promoted Jomo Cosmos to the elite league of South African football, while leading Phalaborwa United to promotion as team captain remains another career highlight.

He also shared the challenges he faced during his time as a professional player, including inconsistent game time and occasional rejection due to tribal discrimination. “I had to join the gym to do extra work and remain prayerful amidst the difficulties,” he said.

Maluleke shared advice for aspiring professional players, emphasising the importance of discipline, courage, dedication, commitment, a never-give-up attitude, faith in God, and self-belief.

Although he has retired from playing, Maluleke said he will continue to contribute to Phalaborwa United. “I am still a huge part of the club and will assist whenever my experience is needed, offering guidance and solutions,” he concluded.
