Legendary news anchor crowned Mopani champ

Former radio news anchor, Freddy Rikhotso, was once again crowned Limpopo’s second fastest man.

Former radio news anchor, Freddy Rikhotso, was once again crowned Limpopo’s second fastest man after taking position two in the 200 metre race at the Golden Games for the elderly at Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Wednesday 3 October.

He completed the race with the time of 30,05 seconds.

Rikhotso proceeded to the provincial games after defending his Mopani District Championship which was recently held in Sekororo with the time of 29, 09 seconds.

The games are solely for pensioners and is part of the Active Ageing Programme to enhance the quality of life and improve the health of older persons by engaging them in programmes which promote optimal levels of social, physical, mental and emotional well-being.

“I am delighted for defending my district title and for still being the second fastest running man in the province, for the second time in row,” he explained.

He says that he was fully prepared for the competition and hopes to improve on his running time for next year’s games. He also added that it was not an easy task to clock the time during the race considering his age. Besides being an athlete, he is also an award winning author of 18 Xitsonga books.

He retired in 2013 after serving for more than three decades in the SABC’s Munghana Lonene FM. Born and bred in Mafarana Village outside Tzaneen, he certainly hasn’t rested on his laurels during retirement.

He is currently engaged in history research projects in Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
