GOLF: ‘Bigger and better’

The fifth annual Limpopo Golf Championship will be hosted at the Euphoria Golf and Lifestyle Estate in Modimolle by the Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA) and promises to build on the prestigious legacy of the last four years.

The event is sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and will be held from Monday, March 27 until Sunday, April 2. The week-long golfing spectacle will launch new public entertainment events, such as a live comedy show, pool party, and beer garden. A total prize of R2 million keeps the Limpopo Championship as one of the highest paying Sunshine Tour-sanctioned events on the tour schedule, attracting a full field of professional golfers. The tournament has a rich history of Sunshine Tour, DP World Tour and European Challenge Tour winners, such as Juan Carlo (JC) Ritchie, Brandon Stone, and most recently, Mateusz Gradecki.

During the media launch of the tournament held at Euphoria Golf and Lifestyle Estate on Friday, February 3, LTA chairperson, Andrew Dipela, said the tournament is a catalyst for Limpopo’s destination marketing and tourism growth. “It anchored the tourism industry during Covid-19 pandemic. The tournament creates much needed local jobs, attracts significant economic investment, and supports community development. It also provides a massive opportunity for the province to showcase its scenic beauty and offerings to the world.” he said.

Dipela further stated that sport is not the agency’s responsibility as that is the role of the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in the province. “Our mandate is to promote Limpopo as a tourist destination of choice. Our involvement with the Sunshine Tour is to position the province as a premier golf destination to showcase some of the pristine golf courses in the region. During Covid-19 the event created 175 temporary jobs with procurement benefitting enterprises in the Waterberg district.

Return on investment was massive as the event also managed to attract over 6 000 visitors which is envisaged to be more this year. The inaugural Youth Tournament was held, while caddies also underwent training in the past year.
