Hoedspruit 100 off to flying start
The inaugural Hoedspruit 100 cricket tournament got off to a thrilling start with high-scoring matches, close finishes and standout performances.
HOEDSPRUIT – The inaugural Hoedspruit 100 made an impressive debut this past weekend as players, supporters and organisers came together at the Airforce Base Cricket Oval for the opening round of the exciting new 100-ball cricket competition.
The tournament’s first weekend delivered everything cricket fans could have hoped for, including high-scoring innings, closely contested finishes and standout performances that have already begun shaping the race for the title.
Tournament organiser, Mickey Buyst, hailed the opening weekend as a success and praised the enthusiasm shown by everyone involved.
“The launch of the Hoedspruit 100 exceeded our expectations,” said Buyst. “The atmosphere around the ground was fantastic, the standard of cricket was excellent, and it was wonderful to see the community come together to support the event.”
The first match of the tournament saw Hoedspruit Sports Academy (HSA) 1st team secure a narrow two-wicket victory over Black Mambas. After Black Mambas posted 99/4 from their 100 balls, HSA 1st team successfully chased down the target, finishing on 100/8 with 12 balls remaining.

HSA 2nd team then produced the most dominant performance of the weekend, amassing an impressive 208/3 against HSA Octopi Cubs. The Cubs were restricted to 112/4 in reply, handing HSA 2nd team a comprehensive 96-run victory and an early advantage in Group B.
Action continued on the second day with Conservation Cricketers claiming a convincing five-wicket victory over Team 11. Team 11 scored 109/6 from their allotted 100 balls before Conservation Cricketers chased down the target to finish on 113/5 with 27 balls to spare.
The final match of the weekend saw Phalaborwa XI edge Serurubele Development XI by three wickets. After restricting Serurubele to 80/9, Phalaborwa XI reached 81/7 in just 75 balls to complete the successful chase.
The results leave Conservation Cricketers at the top of Group A with three points, followed by HSA 1st Team on two points. In Group B, HSA 2nd Team occupies first place after their dominant victory, while Phalaborwa XI sits second after also collecting three points.

Buyst believes the opening fixtures demonstrated exactly why the 100-ball format has become so popular.
“The matches were fast-paced, entertaining and competitive from start to finish. We saw big scores, quality bowling performances and some very close contests. It was exactly the type of cricket we wanted to bring to Hoedspruit.”
He added that the tournament represents more than just a new competition.
“This is about creating opportunities for players, growing the game in our area and bringing people together through sport. Seeing the support from players, volunteers, sponsors and spectators over the weekend was incredibly rewarding.”
Buyst also thanked everyone who contributed to the successful launch of the tournament.
The second round of the Hoedspruit 100 is this coming weekend June 27 and June 28.
