Unbeaten Phalaborwa XI reach Hoedspruit 100 final

Formed just a month ago, Phalaborwa XI have now won all four of their matches heading into Sunday's Hoedspruit 100 final.

PHALABORWA – The Phalaborwa XI cricket team has secured its place in the final of the Hoedspruit 100 cricket challenge after a convincing semi-final victory over the Black Mambas at the Hoedspruit Air Force Base on Sunday, July 12.

Mambas’ venom neutralised early

Batting first, the Black Mambas posted 83/6 from their allotted 100 balls. Phalaborwa XI responded dominantly, chasing down the target of 84 in just 53 balls while losing only three wickets.

100 balls, no room for error

The tournament, which began on June 20, features eight teams from Hoedspruit, Phalaborwa, The Oaks, and surrounding areas.

The 100-ball format sees each team face a maximum of 100 deliveries, with bowlers delivering five-ball overs.

New kids on the block, old hands at winning

Phalaborwa XI has impressed throughout the competition, winning all four of its matches despite being formed only a month ago. The team comprises players from both the rural and urban communities of Ba-Phalaborwa.

Team captain Juber Patel credited the side’s success to its disciplined bowling attack and strong team spirit.

“Our bowling has been our biggest strength. We’ve been able to take wickets consistently, and the team spirit has been outstanding,” Patel said.

Nkuna keeps the wickets tumbling

One of the standout performers has been Namakgale’s Kunene Nkuna, who has claimed an impressive 15 wickets in four matches.

Five from five in Patel’s sights

Looking ahead to the final, Patel expressed confidence that his side is ready to continue its unbeaten run.

“We are prepared, both physically and mentally, for the final. Our goal is to make it five wins from five matches,” he said.

Phalaborwa XI will face the Hoedspruit Sports Academy first team (HSA 1) in the tournament final as they look to cap off their tournament with the championship title.
