Hundreds tackle trails at Iron Crown Trail Run in Haenertsburg
A chilly start gave way to clear blue skies as the lively Haenertsburg Winter Festival added to the day's festive atmosphere.
TZANEEN – More than 400 runners gathered for an unforgettable weekend of trail running as the annual Iron Crown Trail Run took place on July 11, drawing athletes and families for a celebration of fitness, adventure and community spirit.
Although the event began with a very cold winter morning, participants were rewarded with clear blue skies as the day unfolded.
The pleasant weather, combined with the lively Winter Festival hosted in Haenertsburg, created a vibrant atmosphere that was enjoyed by competitors and spectators alike.
Lekaka, Els take the 40km titles
The challenging 40km race got underway at 06:30, with runners tackling the demanding course through the scenic Iron Crown trails.
Remaketse Lekaka claimed the men’s overall title in an impressive time of 04:14:39. Mientjie Els, the only female competitor in the 40km event, produced a determined performance to secure the women’s overall title in 05:36:44.
Photo, Van Amstel lead the 22km field
The 22km race started at 08:00 and attracted a strong field of trail runners.
Rufus Photo crossed the finish line first in the men’s division with a winning time of 02:19:47, while Karin van Amstel took top honours in the women’s category after completing the course in 02:43:22.

Sihole, De Figueiredo win the 10km sprint
The 10km race, which started at 09:00, saw fast-paced competition from the outset.
Tebogo Sihole claimed the men’s overall victory in a remarkable time of 52:37, while Filipa de Figueiredo finished as the women’s overall winner in 01:12:59.
A fun run for all ages
The popular 5km fun run began at 08:30 and was well supported by participants of all ages.
Families, first-time runners and community members embraced the opportunity to enjoy the event in a relaxed and festive environment.
A record-breaking turnout
A total of 403 runners participated across all race distances, reflecting the continued growth and popularity of the Iron Crown Trail Run.
