Kurhula is the queen of cakes

Who would have ever thought that a cake can be disguised as pap and mopani worms and still be delicious?

Self-taught creative baker, Kurhula Makhuvele has changed the cake game with her unique and unconventional cakes.

Some of her famous bakes include such as a cabbage look-alike, a frog, a snake, boerewors, and Cyril Ramaphosa. Makhuvele, originally from Rotterdam (Giyani), told the Herald that her love for cooking led her to become the great baker that she is.

“I have always loved being in the kitchen and baking just developed from there,” she said.

Although she started baking from a young age, her business (Fine Bakes Cakes) only started in 2018.

She is currently working alone from her home in Kempton Park and caters to Gauteng clients only.

Although she regards her business as still small, her unique cakes have been getting attention from all over the country.

Makhuvele says she is inspired by cake artists from all over the world.

She also teaches and hosts classes for aspiring bakers.

“My greatest achievement so far has been companies or brands that have recognised my work with requests to make replicas of their products or logos,” she added.
