Get ready to run the Wild Rivers Trail
The Wild Rivers trail run is set to take place on May 27 with a 5km, 10km and 20km route options for trailblazers.
“When you enter the Wild Rivers Nature Reserve, expect to be immersed in the vista of endless woodland and the majestic Drakensberg mountains that change colour as the day progresses,” says organiser, Belinda Barkas. “Situated in the Greater Kruger Park region, this scenic and pristine slice of exclusive African wilderness provides a sanctuary to those that seek an authentic and secluded lifestyle experience in nature.
“The vast 2 600-hectare reserve, bordered by both the Blyde and Olifants rivers, boasts a diverse landscape with rocky outcrops and savanna where plains game and trail runners can roam freely together. “Although elusive leopard wander in the shade of ancient trees and riverbanks are frequented by hippo and crocodiles, there are no Big 5 animals on the reserve, allowing us to run without inhibition on the network of gravel roads and flowing single track,” says Barkas.

All events will start out at Giraffe Dam and the routes will lead runners out into the reserve where they may be lucky enough to spot some game. Every entry includes a conservation fee that will be paid to the Wild Rivers Nature Reserve and used to promote conservation activities both in the reserve and ultimately in the greater Hoedspruit area.
This years’ funds will be used to establish an indigenous nursery where plants will be grown to be used in the rehabilitation of the environment. Entries cost between R150 and R250, depending on the distance of the route.
