Guard shot in head during transit robbery

A Fidelity guard was shot in the head during a shootout with a gang of armed robbers on Tuesday night.

During a well planned ambush, a stolen white Toyota Hilux double cab was used to ram a cash-in-transit vehicle shortly after it left the premises of a British American Tobacco depot in Middelburg.

More robbers, some hiding in an open veld next to the road and others traveling in two high performance vehicles, opened fire on four Fidelity guards, two who were traveling in the cash-in-transit bakkie and two in an escort vehicle.

The driver of the escort vehicle was shot in the head during the shootout.

He later died in hospital. The man’s identity has not been made public yet.

Robbers fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
