Five suspects in handcuffs escape police custody
A man and four women escaped from police custody by making a run for it shortly after they arrived at the Middelburg police station.
Bruce Erasmus was arrested at Game in the Middelburg Mall after an angle grinder was allegedly discovered in his possession, concealed in the front of his pants.
He was the first to escape, running away from police officers with his hands still in handcuffs.
In the chaos that ensued, with police officers chasing Erasmus for several blocks, four females also arrested for shoplifting at the Middelburg Mall, also managed to disappear.
The four women, all said to be Zimbabwean nationals, was caught allegedly stealing goods to the value of more than R4 000 from Foschini.
Police had no way of knowing who the suspects were because they have not been processed at the time of their escape.
Thanks to the Middelburg Mall security procedure, where all people suspected of shoplifting is formally banned from the mall premises by signing a form, the suspects’ details and photos could be supplied to police.
A case of escaping from lawful custody is being investigated. Anyone who recognises any of the suspects can phone the investigating officer Lt Col Alfred Moloko on 082 449 0329.
