Mother, child dies

A mother and child lost their lives when a car collided with a truck on the N4 Saturday morning 16 August.

The white Nissan Sentra looked like it was chewed up by a metal eating monster, with a piece of the car thrown on either side of the busy freeway.

In between the two mangled pieces of metal lay three seemingly lifeless bodies.

A woman and child were declared dead on the scene whilst a man was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

The accident happened on Saturday morning just before 08:00, 20 km outside Middelburg just after the Middelburg dam.

An eyewitness, Henk Pienaar, was driving 30 m behind the Nissan Sentra when the accident occurred.

“I cannot tell you why it happened. We were both driving in the fast lane and the car just suddenly swerved into the oncoming lane and into the truck.”

The car collided with the side of the truck and was torn into pieces.

Mr Pienaar said that he had to break hard to avoid colliding with the car. “My skid marks are still visible on the road.”

• The deceased were not identified at the time of going to press.
