Mhluzi murder case postponed to December in Middelburg

Accused, Meluleki Jiyane in Mhluzi murder case, stays in custody as his case moves to pre-trial conferencing in December.

Meluleki Manelisi Siguqa Jiyane, accused of murdering 29-year-old Mvelo Perseverance Zulu-Ngobese, in Middelburg Mhluzi, remains in custody as his case moves to the next stage.

Jiyane appeared in the Middelburg Regional Court on October 8.

NPA confirms charges

The case was postponed to December 3 for pre-trial conferencing, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed.

“The investigations are completed,” said Monica Nyuswa, NPA media spokesperson.

Nyuswa also clarified that Jiyane is facing charges of murder, attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The charges are all from the same incident during the early hours of November 1, 2025, in Ext 4, Mhluzi. As previously reported, the State alleges that Zulu-Ngobese went outside after hearing cries for help.

This is when Jiyane allegedly stabbed Zulu-Ngobese.

Four other people were also allegedly attacked and stabbed in the violent conflict.

Jiyane fled Middelburg soon after the night of the alleged stabbings, but was arrested in Ulundi, KZN, on June 17, after a manhunt lead by Mhluzi SAPS.

His bail application was refused in August, and he remains behind bars.

A mothers grief

Zulu-Ngobese’s mother, Khosi Zulu, has spoken publicly about her struggle to come to terms with her son’s death, recalling the devastating midnight phone call informing her that her son had been killed.

“No parent should have to endure such a call or face their child’s birthday without them,” she said.

No trial date had been confirmed at the time of publication.
