EFF causes stir during council inauguration
A lot of familiar faces were ominously missing from the floor when the newly elected council was sworn in at the banquet hall on Thursday.
With only a hand full of former councillors retaining their seats, the ANC will have its work cut out for it, against a formidable opposition, including a vocal EFF.
With the first foot in the door, the EFF stayed true to its form, challenging newly elected Speaker, Andries Mabena, on a point of order.
Council rushed through Item SC02/08/2016, relating to the standing rules of order for Councillors, which spurred two EFF members to call the house to order.
Me Mabena only succeeded in silencing the EFF, by promising to return to the item at a later stage.
If the EFF’s conduct is anything to go by, Speaker Mabena and the ANC should buckle up for a bumpy ride.
Everything however went to plan for the ANC who voted in Mayor Mike Masina for a second term without hassle.
As predicted by www.mobserver.co.za, the Chief Whip position went to former Mayoral Committee Member, Ms Semakaleng Nkadimeng.
The public gallery had to be called to order on a number of occasions, being reminded that the sitting was formal, with only Councillors allowed to give inputs by grace of the Speaker.
