Wanted: Hit and run Fortuner
An elderly couple from Middelburg had a rude interruption on Monday whilst on their way to their holiday destination to celebrate their wedding anniversary.
Errol and Lenie Sutton were barely out of Middelburg, on their way to a week-long vacation near Nylstroom, when they came across an accident on the N4 highway at the Olifants River bridge.
Traffic officials on the scene signalled them to reduce speed as they neared the scene. The Sutton couple were driving at about 80 km/h when they felt a jolt from the back. A white Toyota Fortuner, with a male driver and Gauteng number plates, drove into the Nissan Tida sedan the couple was travelling in.
Before they could come to a complete standstill, the Fortuner reversed and sped away. The Sutton couple attempted to chase after him to get his registration number but they could not manage to catch up with him.
Whilst at the eMalahleni Police Station to report the matter, a thief tried to break into their car. The car would not lock properly after the accident.
The couple tried to patch their car as much as possible, because they paid in advance and the holiday was non refundable. They arrived at their destination late on Monday night.
“What angers me the most is that the man in the Fortuner did not even try to find out if anybody was hurt. He just sped off. Shame on him,” said Lizelle Swanepoel, Mrs Sutton’s daughter. The estimated damage to the car amounts to more than R30 000.
They are now attempting to track the vehicle through the camera system at the Middelburg Toll Plaza.
