(Warning Graphic Content) – The plight of the unwanted babies

A spate of infanticides rocked Middelburg. No less than five babies, four at full term and the other at eight months’ gestation, were found dumped and dead in town, and its surrounds, in less than a month.

Three of them found in a mere six days…

Resident Chantel Jacobs, mother of one, cannot get the plight of Middelburg’s unwanted babies out of her head. She has hit the streets in her own personal time to seek a solution to the problem of third trimester abortions, and concealed births.

Chantel is in the process of registering her membership with the babysafe.org, an online campaign aimed at preventing baby dumping, intervention with abandoned babies, support to pregnant women and girls in crisis, and the empowerment of indigent mothers.

“I came from Bloemfontein where I was involved with numerous welfare projects, including the treatment of terminally ill cancer patients over weekends, I feel it is my Christian duty to offer help where it is needed,” Chantel told www.mobserver.co.za.

She moved to Middelburg in 2013, but something was lacking in her life.

After viewing an insert on Carte Blanche about baby safes, Chantel prayed, and received a divine answer: “Start the project!”

A number of local women committed to the project. She has now decided to pay the R10 500 thebabysafe.org membership fee, which offers training and specialist assistance, as well as a baby safe.

A private area will now have to be identified where women can place their unwanted babies in the safe, without being seen, and prosecuted.

Those looking to assist, either financially towards her registration and training, or by merely offering support, can contact her on 072 936 7254.
