Baby abandoned by sex worker
A three-month-old baby was abandoned on the doorstep of the CMR (Christelike Maatskaplike Raad), along with a handwritten letter from the child’s mother.
Police found the baby wrapped in a blanket, with an extra diaper and full milk bottle.
In the letter, written in English and Siswati, the woman asks the SAPS not to try and trace her because she cannot care for her child as a sex worker.
She pleads with social workers to find the baby a loving family that will adopt the child.
“As a sex worker, I do not know who the father of the child is. Just make sure you find good parents for him,” it reads.
She also included the baby’s name and date of birth.
Police took the baby to social workers.
• In July, Mhluzi Police found a newborn baby in a toilet in Extension 4, but the mother was nowhere to be found.
• In June last year, a woman found a baby in a refuse bin in Joubert Street.
This specific incident prompted Francis Davis to start the Precious Life Baby Project, resulting in the first baby safe being constructed at St John’s Presbyterian Church.
