What is the Cleaver award?

The Cleaver awards is an initiative of the Red Meat Industry Forum, the annual Cleaver Awards recognises the best butcheries based on quality, service, hygiene, and value for money.

Cleaver awards entries and processes

Butcheries were asked to register upfront for this competition, resulting in approximately 600 butcheries signing up. Their customers were then given the opportunity to vote for them.

The South African Meat Industry Company (SAMIC) then anonymously visited all butcheries that received more than 100 votes. Furthermore, all butcheries were audited against an extensive 212-point checklist.

Qualities of a top butchery

Each year, the top butcheries all seem to have three attributes in common: they are customer-centric, they invest in the training and upliftment of their staff, and above all else, they are passionate about what they do, particularly when it comes to quality, service, hygiene and value for money for their customers.

Since 2007 Frank’s Meats have won 1st or 2nd place provincially at the annual Cleaver Awards.

In 2018 they were judged national winners. In 2020 they were awarded the status of best butchery in the country, receiving 1st and 2nd place (platinum and gold awards), in the category – up to three tills.

This is an extraordinary achievement as it is the very first time that both these awards were achieved by the same butchery.
