Hippo spotted near De Villa

Residents and motorists have been warned to be on the lookout for a hippo wandering near the Loskop area.

Elaine Joubert said she and her family were driving from KwaZulu-Natal on the N11 road in the early hours of Wednesday, when they saw a hippo crossing the road from De Villa.

The incident occurred at about 03:45 near De Villa.

Fortunately, Ms Joubert’s daughter in-law was driving slowly when they spotted the hippo in the middle of the road.

The matter was reported to Limpopo officials.

Hippos have been known to migrate between bodies of water.

Motorists and residents are urged to be extra cautious.

This is not the first time a hippo has been spotted in the region.

Earlier this year, an elusive hippo family roamed Middelburg and surrounding areas for six months before being caught.
