Man who fell from roof remains unidentified

The man’s employer declined to comment, citing the incident as an ongoing investigation.

The man who fell through a skylight at the old Pick n Pay Shopping Centre has yet to be identified, as per his family’s request.

The Middelburg Observer can confirm that the man was an employee of Critical Fire Defence, a ventilating equipment manufacturer based in Benoni.

Critical Fire Defence declined to comment, stating that there is an ongoing investigation.

The incident took place on May 2, with the man plummeting from the roof of the building onto the floor of a passageway inside the complex.

As emergency responders arrived at the scene, Masemanga Security Services blocked off the building’s entrance facing Walter Sisulu Street to prevent the gathering assembly of onlookers from entering the premises.

• Sources have told the Observer that store tenants were aware that there was scheduled maintenance on the roof that day, focused on repairs, fire curtains and leakages.
