(Video) Demonstrators picket outside Middelburg Police Station
Residents driving to the Middelburg Police Station and Life Midmed Hospital are urged to use alternative routes due to a picket outside the police station, which started at about 10:30.
A group from the Steve Tshwete Community Forum is protesting against the ‘removal’ of Mpumalanga Commissioner Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela.
In their memorandum addressed to the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, they state that Mpumalanga has been led by commissioners who are not from the province.
They said that Lt-Gen. Manamela has all the required credentials and has effectively fought against illegal mining, and they claim that cash heists have ceased in the province under her leadership.
The group demands that her alleged suspension be stopped, they also argue that she is being targeted because she is a woman in a high position.
The protesters said that if the Minister of Police does not respond, they will shut down all major highways in the province.
