Numerous injured in multiple-vehicle accident on N12
A motorist travelling from Johannesburg narrowly escaped the catastrophic collision and witnessed a truck crashing into several vehicles.
Two serious collisions a few kilometres apart have been reported on the N12 in Middelburg’s direction, near the Blackhill turn-off this morning.
Mr Gert Venter, a motorist who was travelling from Johannesburg a short while ago, witnessed the collision and narrowly escaped being involved.
According to Gert, at least eight to nine vehicles are involved, if not more, and scores of people are injured.
“I did not see exactly how many vehicles are involved, and saw a large number of people sitting or lying on the grass section next to the highway.”
Mr Venter explained that he, another motorist and a taxi transporting school children narrowly missed the collision.
“The female motorist and I both stopped in the middle of the road, and were luckily missed. The next thing a truck rushed past me and crashed into the other vehicles.”
Messages circulated by Mr Louwtjie Swart from Van Wettens Towing, requested more ambulances and appealed to motorists to make way for emergency services.
Mr Swart alerted a few minutes thereafter that another accident was reported on the N12 a few kilometres away from the initial one.
Motorists are cautioned that the N4/N12 split will be closed by TRAC N4, and that heavy mist is affecting driver visibility.
