Verdoorn Street bridge now safe after oil spill

The bridge is now safe to cross.

After oil spilt across the entire left-hand lane of the Verdoorn Street bridge near the Eastdene Shopping Centre, bakkies were seen losing control as they attempted to cross the overpass.

Fortunately, the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality has covered the oil with sand to prevent drivers from losing control of their vehicles and causing a serious accident.

Steve Tshwete Municipality workers tending to the spillage.

Traffic did pile up as the workers were attending to the spill, with drivers unsure whether they were allowed to drive through the lane as it was being tended to.

Traffic flow has since returned to normal.

Muhammed Hoosen and Suhail Dada of BMF were the first to report the scene, alerting officials and warning drivers of the potential danger.

The bridge is now safe to cross.

It took the municipality an hour to arrive at the bridge.

It is unclear as to what caused the spillage, but it is presumed to have leaked from a heavy motor vehicle.
