(Video) Memorial service to be held for school bus crash victims this Wednesday
On Wednesday, the provincial government will hold a memorial service to honour the six learners who tragically lost their lives in a devastating accident last Wednesday.
The funeral arrangement are yet to be confirmed.
Five learners lost their lives when their school bus collided with a train about 40 minutes outside Middelburg.
They were on their way home from school, a routine journey that ended in unimaginable sorrow for their loved ones.
Another child died the next day in hospital.
The learners at Morelig Combined School have been left reeling in shock, with pupils voicing their concerns over the persistent mechanical issues plaguing the school buses and alleged reckless driving.
Grave allegations have been made against the bus driver, including several family members of the victims claiming the bus driver was under the influence at the time of the crash. Despite these accusations, no arrest has been made yet.
Colonel Donald Mdhluli of the Mpumalanga police confirmed that six counts of culpable homicide have been registered with the Middelburg police. He also said the police are still obtaining statements, and investigations are underway.
The memorial service will be attended by the families of the deceased, school officials, and MECs from the departments of Transport, Education, Community Safety, and Security and Liaison, as well as the mayor of the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality.
