Update: Department of Education suspends teacher for pulling learner’s hair

The department will offer learners counselling after the shocking hair-pulling incident.

The Mhluzi teacher caught on camera violently trying to cut off a learner’s long braids has been suspended.

In a media release this morning, the Mpumalanga Department of Education said, “The department has decided to institute a precautionary suspension against the teacher with immediate effect while the investigation into the circumstances that led to this incident unfolds.”

The incident occurred at L.D Moetanalo Secondary School.

According to reports, the school’s code of conduct prohibits long hair.

In the viral video, the teacher can be seen pulling the learner’s hair while attempting to cut it.

The department also said it would provide the learner and other learners in the classroom with psychosocial counselling to help them overcome the traumatic experience.

Meanwhile, the teacher will remain suspended as the department conducts its investigation, “The department will provide more information on the matter once the investigation has concluded.”
