Middelburg Marathon Club to host night race in honour of Usher Bell

The Middelburg Marathon Club has graciously honoured the late Usher Bell by dedicating their next race to his memory.

With the return of the Middelburg Marathon Club’s Scaly 5 Night Series, September 18’s iteration of the event will be in memory of the late Usher Bell.

Bell worked closely with the club over the past number of years as the lead car driver for many of the organisation’s races.

Charmaine van der Merwe, Chairperson of the Middelburg Marathon Club, told the Middelburg Observer that Bell had started his collaboration with the club out of his own personal capacity, “He was always friendly and willing to help the club. It was a pleasure working with Usher, he will be sorely missed.”

The race will take place at Hoërskool Kanonkop at 18:00. A 4.9km and a 10km race will be held, with registration available an hour earlier at 17:00.

If any athletes would like to take part in the event, R50 is required for the 4.9km, R80 for the 10km, and R40 for an ASA temporary licence.

Prizes of up to R400 are up for grabs in the open category.

More information about the race.

Bell tragically lost his life after collapsing in the Middelburg Mall on August 22.

He worked at Auto Investments and was a well-known and widely beloved figure in Middelburg.

An in-depth interview with the Bell family can be read on the front page of this week’s Middelburg Observer.
