Water meter suspects ‘caught wet-handed’

Hot pursuit leads to the arrest of four individuals in connection to stolen water meters.

Four suspects have been arrested in connection to water meter thefts, after a car chase involving SAPS and the Sector 4 Radio Group led to Rockdale.

A blue Ford Fiesta was stopped, with the three men and one woman found inside arrested and taken in for questioning.

CPF vice-chairperson Tiny Louw was part of the successful chase, in which water meters were found in the possession of the four individuals.

For the past few months, water meter thefts have skyrocketed in Middelburg, with thieves desperate to leave behind a slippery mess in pursuit of the copper found in the meters.

The Incident on Springbok Street

The latest incident took place this afternoon at roughly 13:15 on Springbok Street, where the suspected blue Ford Fiesta can be seen scouting houses for potential meters. Once locked in, the car pulls over, with one man exiting, and then smashing the water meter with what appears to be a rock, in order to dislodge the pipping.

The man then takes the meter and reenters the vehicle, making for a quick getaway.

DA Ward Councilor Helda de Klerk sent the video material to the Middelburg Observer, stating, “They took it in two seconds!”

Earlier this month, over 30 water meters were stolen during a two-week period in Kanonkop and Dennesig. Leaving many residents marooned as they would wake up, only to find their water flowing down the street.
